There were no external alarms in space. No core meltdown, no security system breach, no life support failure. It had put its internal alarms—a warning about operating temperature, proximity alerts for shrapnel and space rock that might perforate it, notifications about performance reliability—in tertiary processing for relative peace and quiet. And that's what space was; peace and quiet, distant starlight, drifting further and further apart from the rest of the wreck. Peace and quiet.
